Speedrunner defeats Ocarina of Time … in Super Smash Bros. Brawl
In a funny commercial for the then-nascent virtual console, Super Smash Bros. Brawl features a handful of timed demos for classic Nintendo games, such as Star fox 64 and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, among a few others. Normally these demos are a cool way to experience the first few moments of a game. Maybe you can finish a boss fight or get a Power Star if you’re good enough at the game you’re trying out. For speedrunner Save state, however, it was not good enough; instead, they found a way to beat The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time within four minutes and fifty seconds allowed by the demo. They passed the race using a few items provided in the Japanese version of the demo. You can read an explanation below and then watch the next video to see the speedrun.
This version of Ocarina of Time included in the Super Smash Brothers Brawl Masterpieces selection is a timed demo of the game (5 minutes) that includes 2 save files: amount of progression after coming of age. With the items given to us in the JP version of the demo, we are able to barely squeeze two SRMs with custom heap manipulations, as well as a fish allowance in Goron City to perform a current SRM cutscene. wrong in the credits.
If that isn’t impressive enough for you, Savestate also found a way to beat Ganon via the Super Smash Bros. Brawl Ocarina of time demo in four minutes and fifty-six seconds. Read on for a quick description of how Savestate did it, then watch it happen in the video that follows.
For this route, you only have about 10 (ten!) Seconds of leeway over the entire 5-minute demo. Two HESS (backing very quickly), a Lost Woods bridge jump, an SRM and a clean fight from Ganon are barely enough to time in under 5 minutes. After grinding for over 200 attempts, I was finally able to perform well enough to defeat Ganon with a mid 4:56 (3.5 seconds before the end of the demo).
I wish I could be this good at, well, anything.
