Ocarina of Time Speedrunner defeats Ganon in Super Smash Bros. time limit. Brawl
After a speedrunner finds a route that beats Ocarina of Time within the Super Smash Bros. demo time limit. Brawl, they beat Ganon over another.
One of Nintendo’s most historic game releases is expected to be The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Being a game that has successfully translated the Zelda Formula from 2D to 3D gaming, it is praised by fans and critics for the innovations it has brought. It has also been released several times over the years, including a full remake in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D for Nintendo 3DS. One of these versions includes a five minute demo that was included in Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl is the third game of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, released in 2007 for the Nintendo Wii. One feature introduced in this game was “Masterpieces,” which were several different retro Nintendo titles on disc. Each of these were free playable demos that also came with a time limit that players had to play these games. They were all aimed at promoting Nintendo Virtual Console games on the Wii Shop Channel, Ocarina of time being one of those games. This demo had two pre-loaded save files for Young Link and Adult Link, as well as just five minutes of gameplay. Under these conditions, a route was found to skip most of the game and go to the final boss, Ganon.
The speedrunner, known as Savestate, had previously beaten the Super Smash Bros. Brawl demo of Ocarina of time earlier this week, beating the game in under five minutes. The key to beating it was through the use of items that were included in the Japanese version of Super Smash Bros. BrawlThe game’s masterpiece demo. Their expert use of items was key to triggering the chain issue in the credits. This race involves the same strategy but using the warp to move to the final battle stage.
The race is a sight to behold, where after more than 200 speedrun attempts, Savestate was able to not only make his way to the final battle with Ganon, but also beat him and unleash the final blow seconds after the delay of the demo. This route, according to them, was much more difficult than the previous one, due to the strict time given to defeat the boss in relation to the credit warping. This leniency was 45 seconds according to them, and that the successful race contained some errors. Either way, Savestate defines another Ocarina of time world speedrun record.
The final speedrun time was 4 minutes and 56 seconds, exceeding the time limit to play this demo, with the notification appearing in the middle of the cutscene of Ganon’s defeat. This accomplishment is not to be despised, when normal speedruns of Ocarina of time clock in about 17 minutes. Savestate expressed his joy at having been able to beat the game under these strict conditions.
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time is available on Nintendo 64 and 3DS.
