Ocarina of Time goes cooperative multiplayer thanks to a fan

The Unreal Engine mod for Zelda: Ocarina of Time now has a multiplayer component allowing players to be more than just the hero of time in co-op.

Players can now tackle The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time with friends after a fan and developer added co-op multiplayer to an already comprehensive mod. The Unreal Engine Fan Remake Ocarina of time created by CryZENx was completed last December after years of work and brings much of what made the original title a classic in modern, high-end graphical splendor, along with a few new features.

While the The Legend of Zelda is best known for its sprawling single-player adventures, Nintendo has officially dabbled in multiplayer a few times for its popular fantasy series. Perhaps the most recognizable of these attempts is The Legend of Zelda: Four Swordsoriginally released with A link to the past for the Game Boy Advance. This is one of the few times players have each been able to play as Link simultaneously, like most other forms of co-op across the Zelda series appear as limited game mechanics. Now, however, arguably the most well-received Zelda all-time title has a way for players to engage in co-op by summoning ideas similar to Four swords.

New video from CryZENx showcases over twenty full minutes of cooperative multiplayer gameplay in their Unreal Engine Zelda: Ocarina of Time mod. It covers part of the introductory area of Kokiri Forest up to the first main boss of the Deku Tree dungeon. Link isn’t the only playable option either, as it looks different Zelda character skins are also available. From the video, it looks like only one player controls what’s equipped at any given time via the pause menu, although that doesn’t take away from what’s an impressive addition to an already impressive top of the line created by fans. Those interested can support CryZENx on Patreon to access updates and the mod itself.

The desire for multiplayer cooperation in Zelda seems to be growing, and not just for older games in the series. At the end of last year, a major multiplayer bounty was created by a breath of the wild gamer and content creator who wanted the feature to be implemented in Nintendo’s open-world slice. The financial incentive actually worked and made fans develop such a mod from the beginning of 2022.

While this isn’t a goal for the franchise at all yet, Nintendo may consider getting into a multiplayer component again in the future. Zelda securities. The desire is clearly there with fans taking it upon themselves to add the gameplay mechanic to some of their favorite episodes. Whether The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time the multiplayer mod proves to be a success, so that might be enough of a signal for Nintendo to at least provide a co-op multiplayer element for future titles.
