An astonishing demo version of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time has revealed new details about early ideas for Nintendo’s N64 masterpiece, like Link being able to transform into his fairy Navi.

The demo in question was found on an older N64 development cartridge used to contain the Nintendo F-Zero X racer. Upon closer inspection, files relating to a demo version of Zelda from 1997 were also found, in part. saved but some still intact.

The details have now been enthusiastically shared by the Forest of Illusion Twitter account, dedicated to preserving lost pieces of Nintendo history. There is a lot to see.

First, a series of magical spell medallions that granted revealing effects, such as the soul medallion that allows Link to “become Navi and fly”.

Other medallions allow Link to fire arrow attacks or hide in a cloak of darkness to avoid enemies. Another medal allowed Link to warp when in danger, while two more allowed him to create and put out fire.

There is a very different world map for Hyrule:

And Link’s Pegasus Boots have also reportedly appeared:

Fans even translated some of the text found in the game and suggested that early versions of Ocarina‘s plot would have played out very differently.

For example, the Mojo tree was going to be a prison for the fairies in the game – including Navi – which Link would then free.

We’ll be keeping our eyes peeled for more on the leak, although fans who have examined its files have warned that the ROM is only partially complete. Presumably, this early version was not intended for the public eye, which is why the cartridge was later reused to store the F-Zero.
