“In the past, naturalist artists worked primarily with natural materials. nowadays we have mountains of abandoned technology. these dumps are the modern quarries. and artists like me can get anything out of these resources. all of my recent works are made from salvaged industrial waste and surplus technologies that our society is buried in. san francisco based artist constantine zlatev considers these statements as the engine of each of its creations. with this mentality, he is able to see the possibility of designing something meaningful for the world we currently live in while using remnants of the past. following this philosophy, he developed a pair of installations called “the last gun” and “chifte kavali”.

similar to the works of pedro reyes, each of the constructions consists of deactivated weapons. more precisely, zlatev has transformed gun barrels into robotic double flutes, which are played with compressed air. the mechanics are programmed and controlled via open-source electronics using an Arduino microprocessor and a Raspberry Pi card.

the installations chart and then musically depict the rise and fall of annual US arms exports. the auditory responses of instruments are based on a value judgment – They are scheduled to play ‘And the band played Waltzing Matilda’ by Scottish singer-songwriter Eric Bogle, a famous song with a dark melody meant to convey a strong anti-war message.
