Björk releases a Utopia box set with 14 handcrafted bird call flutes

Sometimes it feels like Björk is on a mission to surpass himself and that’s not a bad thing. In fact, this often leads to brilliant results, like its Utopia box set, which will include a collection of no less than 14 hand-made bird song flutes.

Bird song flutes – let’s be honest, this is what we all want to know – are made in collaboration with Quelle est Belle, a company based in the mountains of southern France (ofc). The flutes were selected by Björk herself and come with a booklet detailing each bird call and providing instructions.

Obviously, the box set also contains the music for the album, as well as videos – like the videos made by Tobias Gremmler for “Losss” and “Tabula Rasa” – and an unreleased instrumental track. It’ll set you back £ 500, but can you put a price on the screaming flutes?

In a statement, Björk explains the box set: “Utopia is so much about the song of birds and, from a sonic point of view, the mutation between synth / bird, bird / flute, flute / synth …. the air like that. was a theme throughout the album. . So I was very excited when I found these handmade wooden flutes precisely imitating particular birds. and I guess I wanted you to have the opportunity to share this with me …….. enjoy it !!! ”

The Utopia Bird Call Box releases November 1 and is available for pre-order now, via A little Indian. Earlier this month (August 5) came the news that the singer is bringing Cornucopia, his live multimedia show, in the UK later in the year.
